‍What Is The Ford C6 Transmission?

The C6 is a 3-speed automatic transmission built for heavy-duty applications from 1966 - 1996. The transmission was outfitted to many vehicles across the entire Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury lineups, including the Ford LTD, F-Series pickup trucks, and even the large V8 Boss Mustang (‘67 - 73).

The transmission was housed in an aluminum alloy casing which lightened it compared to the cast iron 2-speed transmissions Ford had used. The weight reduction (along with the new transmission) improved torque and towing ability almost immediately. Americans who needed more power at lower speeds appreciated the added lower gear, which helped them pull trailers on the farm or across the country as more families than ever hit the open road.

Ford dubbed the new transmission as the “SelectShift” Cruise-O-Matic, which highlighted the ability of the customer to select which lower gear to begin. This feature was welcome news for farmers who needed the added gear to haul loads, and it provided better traction for slippery roads or when customers needed to engine brake down a steep incline.

Although the C6 used the same Simpson planetary system, (which happened to be the latest transmission technology), it was not an expanded version of the C4. The transmissions have different components, so as you perform any transmission repair, know that the parts are not interchangeable.

The C6 was produced at the Livonia plant near Detroit until Ford moved the production to its Sharonville, Ohio, plant in 1982.

While Raybestos will make you go through Autozone, we prefer Transparts Warehouse. The kit includes friction plates, seals, nitrile gaskets and bushings.

Transparts Warehouse is a great resource to keep on speed dial. They are based out of Redding, Ca., and have been in business since 1955. The stock parts are very good quality, and purchasing was easy. Transparts also has a great selection of used parts, (although I wouldn’t recommend a transmission rebuild, always best to use new gaskets, seals and the like).
